LIQUID TANK

Description of the simulated system

A liquid tank with inflow and outflow is simulated. The tank has straight walls. You can adjust the inflow and the outflow during the simulation.

A mathematical model of the tank can be derived using mass balance of the liquid:

A*dh/dt = qin - qout

where A is the cross sectional area, qin is the volumetric inflow and qout is the volumetric outflow.

Aim

The aim of this simulator is to develop an understanding of the dynamic properties of a liquid tank.

Motivation

Liquid tanks are common in industrial process plants. It is useful to understand the dynamic properties of liquid tanks, for example in level control applications.

Tasks

  1. (Theory.) Explain that the liquid level is proportional to the integral of the inflow and proportional to the integral of the outflow. (Tip: Calculate h(t) from the differntial equation.)
  2. Characterize the response in the level if the inflow is constant and different from zero (and the outflow is zero))? Verify using simulations.
