This video (63 minutes) explains and demonstrates using the Kalman Filter as a soft-sensor which provides software-based "measurements". The Kalman Filter is applied to a simulated liquid tank:

        The outflow is estimated, and the flow estimate is used in feedforward control to improve the level control.

        The level is estimated, and the estimate is used to provide increased robustness of the level control system in the presence of level sensor failure.

The video is based on the simulator Kalman Filter. (You may run the simulator while watching the video.)
